Expanded metal is an extremely versatile material. Metalex produces expanded metal in a variety of mesh patterns and sizes. Standard expanded metals feature a diamond-shaped pattern. Larger diamond sizes with smaller strand widths have more open areas and are therefore more cost effective, but may be offer less durability and security.

Standard expanded metal is produced by die cutting and expanding metal in one continuous motion, leaving diamond-shaped voids in the material. The metal strands around the diamond-shaped voids act as trusses, adding strength and stability to the metal. Expanded metal is ideal for a number of applications, and is often used for safety guards on equipment or machinery.

Standard expanded metal has as slightly raised surface, unlike flattened expanded metal.

Mesh Sizes Available

Light meshes (3/16” to 1/2” SWD) are useful for applications such as light diffusers, filters, grates, screens, ceiling panels, and machine guards. Intermediate meshes (1/2” to 3/4” SWD) are perhaps the most versatile, and are commonly used for lockers, chimney caps, vents, patio furniture, grilles, and many more applications.

Expanded metal in heavier and larger mesh patterns (3/4” to 1 1/2” SWD) are typically used for parks and recreation facilities, security fencing applications, machine guards, heavy-duty shelving, automotive racks, ramps, catwalks, and any other type of walkway. For security applications, Metalex products can be produced to Military Specification MIL-M-17194 Type II, Class 1, ASTM 1267.

Micro mesh expanded metal products are available in a variety of sizes: from 0.005” to 0.118” SWD, 0.039” to 0.236” LWD, and 0.005” to 0.079” strand width. Some typical applications include barriers for audio speakers, ceiling panels, air filtration, and machine guards.

Metalex offers expanded metal made from a number of different materials, including cold-rolled steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and copper; a variety of diamond sizes, from 0.039” to 6.00” LWD; several different thicknesses; and sheet sizes ranging from 4’-8’ in width and 4’-10’ in length.
