Square expanded metal is similar to standard, diamond-shaped metal, but both the long and short ways of the opening (LWO and SWO) are equivalent in length. The square shape is achieved by stretching the material further than normal so that the usual diamond shape stretches into a square.
The square shape permits easier passage of light, heat, air, fluids, and sound. While it is lower in strength, it is a cost-effective alternative to standard or hexagonal expanded metal. Typical applications include machine guards, cages or enclosures, bridge infill panels, fencing, and many more.
Mesh Sizing
Light meshes (3/16” to 1/2” SWO) are typically used for diffusers, filters, or screens. Intermediate meshes (1/2” to 3/4” SWO) are the most versatile, often used to build lockers, vents, grilles, and patio furniture.
Heavier and larger mesh sheets (3/4” to 1 1/2” SWO) are typically used in parks, recreational facilities, heavy-duty fencing, machine guards, shelving, automotive racks, and ramps or walkways. Metalex products can be produced to Military Specification MIL-M-17194 Type II, Class 1, ASTM 1267 for high-security applications.
Metalex also produces micro mesh products in a number of sizes: from 0.005” to 0.118” SWO, 0.039” to 0.236” LWO, and 0.005” to 0.079” strand width. Micro meshes are often used as barriers for audio speakers, air filtration meshes, and light machine guards.
Metalex fabricates expanded metal using a number of different materials, including cold-rolled, galvanized, and stainless steel; copper; and aluminum; and in a variety of different opening sizes ranging from 0.039” to 6.00” LWO. Sheet sizes are available in 4’-8’ in width and 4’-10’ in length.
